March is here, and the calendar is turning over fast. Basketball trophies are handed out, spring sports are warming up, two local shows are closing this Saturday, and we've got highs in the 70s all week. Here's everything worth knowing about this week in the greater St. George area.
Last Chance: Two Shows Close This Saturday
If you've been meaning to catch a show and keep pushing it off, this is your week. Two local productions wrap up their runs on Saturday, March 7, and both are worth the effort.
Kiss Me, Kate! at St. George Musical Theater closes its run after nearly seven weeks. SGMT's signature in-the-round staging at the Historic Opera House puts you just feet from the action, and this Cole Porter classic is tailor-made for that intimate setup. If you haven't seen a show in their current Main Street space, this is a meaningful one to catch. The theater is in the middle of building a brand-new 375-seat venue nearby, so performances at the Historic Opera House won't last forever. Showtimes vary, so check sgmusicaltheater.com for the remaining schedule.
Over in Ivins, Million Dollar Quartet is finishing up at the Hafen Theatre at Tuacahn. The show recreates the legendary 1956 jam session between Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. Multiple performances remain this week, including matinee and evening options through Saturday. Tickets at tuacahn.org.

Saturday Morning Markets
Three markets are open this Saturday, and they're all worth a stop.
Downtown Farmers Market runs every Saturday at Vernon Worthen Park (300 S 400 E). Winter hours are 10 AM to 2 PM. Expect local produce, baked goods, handmade crafts, live music, and free samples from a few of the vendors. It's dog-friendly and one of the most consistently fun Saturday morning hangouts in town. downtownfarmerstg.com

Under the Friday Night Lights (and Saturday Morning Sun)
Basketball season is officially in the rearview mirror, and what a ride it was for our local schools.
On the boys side, Hurricane made the most noise, reaching the 4A state championship game at Weber State before falling to Provo 62-42 on Feb. 21. It was a deep run for the Tigers, who knocked off Crimson Cliffs in the quarterfinals and reached the title game as a No. 6 seed. Dixie (No. 5) also made a strong push to the semifinals, while Pine View (No. 2) and Crimson Cliffs (No. 3) both saw their seasons end in the quarterfinal round.
The girls were even more dominant. Dixie earned the No. 1 overall seed in 4A with a 21-2 record and made it all the way to the championship before falling to Green Canyon 59-53. Desert Hills (No. 4), Pine View (No. 3), and Snow Canyon (No. 5) all made the quarterfinals, giving Region 9 four of the top five seeds. That's a statement about the level of basketball being played in this county.
Now the calendar turns to spring. Baseball, softball, soccer, track and field, tennis, and lacrosse are all ramping up for the new season. If you've got a high schooler in the house, this week is full of early-season practices and preseason scrimmages as teams gear up for opening games. The HS Softball March Warm-Up tournament this Friday and Saturday (see above) is a great taste of what's ahead.
One more thing for parents: Friday, March 6, marks the end of the third quarter for Washington County schools. And Spring Break starts the following Monday, March 9, through the 13th. Plan accordingly.
If you haven't been to Red Cliff Gallery in a while, now's the time. The Southern Utah Art Guild's current exhibit, "Close to Home," features 155 works by 65 local artists, and it's free to walk through. What makes this one different is that Red Rock Writers and the St. George chapter of the Utah State Poets Society contributed poems inspired by specific paintings in the show, so you're getting a conversation between visual art and the written word on the walls.
Jack Burns took Best of Show for his oil painting of The Watchman in Zion. The exhibit runs through March 26, and the gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday from noon to 4 PM. It's inside the City Commons building at 220 N 200 East. southernutahartguild.com
Worth a visit on your lunch break or a slow Saturday afternoon.
Trail Weather Is Here
This week's forecast is about as good as it gets for early March. Expect sunny skies, with highs in the low 70s to upper 70s and overnight lows in the low-to-mid 40s. Minimal rain in the forecast. If you've been waiting for the right week to knock out a Snow Canyon loop or finally hike the Lava Flow Trail, this is it. Mornings will still have a bite, so layer up if you're heading out before 9 AM.
See You Out There
That's the rundown for this week. Between the live shows, baseball, and this stretch of weather, there's no excuse to stay on the couch. If you have a local event, a new business opening, or a tip you think we should cover, just hit reply. We read everyone.
