Summer is showing its hand this week, with the first stretch of triple-digit afternoons in the forecast and a calendar that leans into the cooler hours. Monday brings a free concert in the park, Friday adds a free outdoor movie, and Tuacahn keeps two productions running after dark. The Museum of Art also opened new summer exhibits over the weekend, so there is plenty to do without standing in the midday sun.

The city's Concert in the Park series lands on its June date this Monday with Swedish-born songwriter Sofia Talvik, who plays Americana and folk with a quiet, story-driven style. She has performed in 49 of the 50 states, and her set is built for the kind of warm evening where you spread out on the grass and stay a while.

Two shows are alternating nights on the outdoor stage this week. "Les Misérables" plays Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, while Disney and Pixar's "Finding Nemo: A 70-Minute Family Musical" takes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Both start at 8:45 p.m., once the canyon walls have cooled and the cliffs catch the last light.

"Finding Nemo" is the easy pick for families with younger kids, since it wraps in a little over an hour and leans on puppetry and color. "Les Misérables" is the bigger, longer night, with the full sweep of the score against the red rock. "Grease" joins the rotation in July if you are planning further ahead.

Even with this week's heat, evenings in Padre Canyon ease off after dark, so a light layer is a smart pack for the back half of a show. Tickets and exact seat pricing are on Tuacahn's website, and parking is free.

The city's Movies in the Park series shows "Brother Bear" this Friday at Town Square Park. Screenings run the second and fourth Fridays through October, all free, with food trucks and vendors on hand. Both Saturday markets are on summer hours and are worth catching early before it heats up.

The St. George Museum of Art opened two new summer exhibitions over the weekend, and they are on view all week with free admission at 47 E. 200 North downtown. One of the two draws from the city's decades-long sister-city relationship with Ibigawa, Japan, showing gifts exchanged between the two cities over the years, on display through October 7. The museum is generally open Monday through Saturday, and it makes a cool, quiet midday stop.

Out in Ivins, the galleries at Kayenta Art Village are open through the week if you want to browse sculpture, photography, jewelry, and pottery, with Xetava Gardens Café on site for lunch. More on current shows is at kayentaartvillage.com.

St. George Musical Theater is between shows this week, with its next production, "Best of Broadway 4: Stars, Stripes and Showtunes," opening June 25 and running through August 8 at the Historic Opera House on Main Street. Meet Davey, a young Bernese Mountain Dog and Border Collie mix at the St. George Animal Shelter, about a year and a half old and roughly 50 pounds. He is house-trained, neutered, and vaccinated, and the shelter lists him as good with kids, other dogs, cats, and even chickens and ducks.

Davey was raised with room to roam and an outdoor streak, so he would do best in an active home with space to explore or a job to keep his mind busy. The adoption fee for dogs is $60 and includes vaccines, microchipping, and spay or neuter. Visits are by appointment, so call the shelter at 435-627-4350 to set up a meeting. With the first 100-degree afternoons rolling in, this is the week to point newcomers toward Veyo Pool, about 20 minutes north in the small town of Veyo. Tucked into a basalt canyon along the Santa Clara River, the spot runs 12 to 15 degrees cooler than St. George, and the spring-fed pool stays around the high 80s and gets drained and refilled each evening with fresh water.

It has been a family-run summer escape for generations, with shaded campsites, a snack-and-burger grill, rock climbing on the canyon walls, and the local rite of passage of catching (and releasing) crawdads in the stream. There is a per-person canyon access fee, outside food is allowed, and seats in the shade go fast, so get there early. The week starts hot and gets hotter through midweek before easing back a touch for the weekend. Plan outdoor time for mornings and evenings, carry water, and save the midday hours for shade or air conditioning.

The timing works in your favor for most of this week's events: the Monday concert and Friday movie both start at 7 p.m., the Saturday markets wrap by early afternoon, and Tuacahn does not raise the curtain until 8:45 p.m. Hydrate well before any of it.
